Is there an opportunity or problem in the arts or cultural services sector that you can’t stop thinking about? Do you wish you had help to develop a plan for possible solutions, or to solicit actionable feedback on how to further your vision?
DASSAN19 Hackathon (March 15-17, 2019) offers a chance for compelling projects that best align the potential of the arts and technology to work with an interdisciplinary team in Toronto, Ontario. All that is required is your time and enthusiasm.
Whether you want to prototype your idea, get help finessing your plan, or something else entirely, you will have three intensive days to work with dedicated professionals, mentors, and peers to give you the confidence to pursue your vision.
Your project also has a chance to receive a $5,000 grand prize to be awarded on the last day of the Digital Arts Services Symposium from March 18-20, 2019. The grand prize will help the winning team pursue their project ideas further for the benefit of the sector.
What types of projects are eligible?
It is not necessary to have a complete project plan before submitting your idea. Simply tell us about the opportunity or problem that you want to address, the kind of change or impact you want to see, and how technology may be used to realize your vision. Proposals that strike a balance between being ambitious and grounded and are led by people that demonstrate a readiness to work with an interdisciplinary team are encouraged. Proposals will be accepted from Canadian residents or Canadian organizations and collectives operating on a non-profit basis only.
Project proposals that are collective in nature, cross boundaries in disciplines and sectors, or address the specific needs of a small or indie arts community will have priority.
Who will I be working with?
Each project will receive guidance and support from an interdisciplinary team of mentors including post-secondary graduate students and established professionals from the arts, technology, design research, and business sectors. Students from University of Toronto’s iSchool and other educational institutions will be participating in order to receive valuable learning experience while also equipping each project team at the same time with the right talents.
Selection Process & Deadline
A maximum of four projects will be selected to participate in the Hackathon. Unsuccessful proposals will have a chance to be featured as a Salon session during the Symposium, where you will receive support hosting a focused discussion with attendees. Proposals are due December 31, 2018. Confirmation of participation will be announced by January 7, 2019.
Additional Benefits
Hackathon participants will receive complimentary registrations to all three days of the Symposium from March 18-20, 2019 including hospitality (value of up to $475). Accommodation, per diem, and a travel subsidy to Toronto will also be offered to a maximum of two out-of-town Hackathon participants per project. Salon participants will receive complimentary registration to one day of the Symposium March 18, 19 or 20, 2019 including hospitality (value of up to $170).
